While it does have poignant moments, the overall appeal of the drama is restricted because the masses among the audience will not find much entertainment in it.On the whole, Jigra is a film for the class audience only. It will do well in the high-end multiplexes and single-screen cinemas of the big cities. The Dassera holiday tomorrow (Saturday) will help. Masses will not appreciate it.

Bhatt’s performances usually have at least a couple of distinctive notes. Here, badass replacing vulnerability, those edges are blunted. ‘Jigra’ becomes a stretch, of both patience and credulity.

Jigra offers Alia a lot of scope to create some solid moments. But most of the film feels like an exercise to cash in on her star power rather than create an interesting premise around her. My biggest grouse is the fact that we never get to see Alia’s character meet the family that wronged her brother. The film ends on a sentimental note, but emotions can only work if you are invested in the storyline. Jigra is a great addition to Alia’s resume, but as a film it fails to drive home the point

Vedang Raina is the young star to look out for. This is his first big screen debut after Netflix’s The Archies. He truly has the power to win the hearts of the audiences through his acting skills. The only negative in the film is the first part which is a bit of a stretch, otherwise the second half is fast-paced, engaging and immersive.

The first half feels dragged focussing more on the drama at meagre pace, taking too long to set up the escape. A jailbreak story warrants more thrills and this is where Jigra stumbles. However, when it comes to the emotional core, Jigra strikes the right chord, putting Satya and Ankur’s bond front and centre. Their relationship is the heart of the film.

All in all, Vasan Bala’s Jigra doesn’t really offer anything unique. A prison break thriller isn’t something we haven’t already seen before (think: Savi, which was released in May). The commentary on feminism could have been more nuanced than “tu mujhe Rakhi bandh ta hai toh main teri Raksha karungi”. Watch if you wish to see Alia Bhatt be all badass and beat up guys in an oversized shirt.
